Anglican Church of the Good Shepherd 20 Summer St. (opposite the Old Town Hall)

We hope you all have survived the cold weather, ice, and snow of January. Cold weather is hard on people, vehicles, and buildings, and we had our share of temporarily frozen pipes and a laboring furnace. However, we got through the cold spell and have plans to install additional insulation in key parts of our church building when it gets warm again.

Newsworthy this past month is the painting of our sanctuary, narthex, and the front door. This includes painting the late 19th century, embossed tin ceiling in the church. It has been over 20 years since we last did this, so the project was long overdue.

Shrove Tuesday In February, we shall prepare for the coming of Lent on Ash Wednesday with a traditional pancake supper on Shrove Tuesday, February 13, at 6:00 p.m. The period preceding Lent is a time for Christians to repent of their sins by attending confession and being shriven or absolved. It was also a time in which to use up rich foods, such as eggs, cream, butter, and sugar, prior to eating plainer foods during the penitential period of Lent Please join us for this richly symbolic and enjoyable free meal in our parish hall.

On the evening of Ash Wednesday, we will celebrate Holy Eucharist and offer the imposition of ashes (the drawing with ashes of a visible cross of the forehead) to those who come forward to the altar rail. These ashes are made by burning palm fronds that were blessed on Palm Sunday in 2017. The ashes are applied by the priest reciting the words “Remember, O man, that thou art dust, and to dust thou shalt return. (Genesis 3:19).” These words remind us of our sinfulness and mortality as we enter 40 days of fasting, alms-giving, prayer, and self-denial in preparation for Easter and the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday.
